Staunton Crossing

Staunton Crossing might be one of our City's greatest success stories. A long time in the making, now steadily moving along, Staunton Crossing is well on its way to becoming a high-tax revenue generating property producing quality jobs, and having a strong economic development presence in the State.  Now that the original 19 buildings have been demolished, we are coming closer to the goal and have some updates to share.

History and Site Development Commitment

Recent Updates

VEDP Grant Funding:   Governor Youngkin announced $90 million in grants for the development of 21 industrial sites across the state, helping localities get shovel-ready for big economic development projects.  Staunton Crossing received $4,555,000, making it the 5th highest grant amount allocated.  Prior to the announcement, staff was notified that grant funding will be provided to construct the necessary sewer infrastructure.

Crossing Way Extension – VDOT Project:  The project was awarded to Caton Construction Group, Inc., for $8,147,230.  Currently, the contractor has mobilized, surveyed, installed E&S controls, cleared the right-of-way, and construction began in January 2023, with a project completion date in May 2024.

The 3,960 linear foot extension will connect Richmond Avenue and Valley Center Drive.  The project will include a 100-space park and ride facility and a 10’ shared use path.  However, the originally proposed bus shelter, electric car charging stations, parking lot lighting, and associated infrastructure, has been eliminated as a result of project costs exceeding the original budget by $2 million.  Since this is a VDOT funded and administered project, City participation and decision-making is very limited.

Staunton Crossing Marketing Plan:
The marketing and social media team held its kickoff meeting in November. JLV Communications is developing its social media strategy and will be working with the city to complete a LinkedIn profile to use as a springboard to an ongoing social media campaign. Narrative for use on the online landing page for Staunton Crossing is being developed. That narrative will be complete and ready for use in early spring 2023, which will allow work on the webpage to move forward.
