Detours Planned Downtown for Dominion Energy Power Line Work

July 14, 2025

A significant traffic detour will be in effect at the intersection of Greenville and Commerce beginning Wednesday morning as Dominion Energy continues work on the Staunton-Valley 230 kilovolt Electric Transmission Line Rebuild Project. The project involves rebuilding approximately 12.4 miles of electric transmission line, including a section that crosses over this major intersection in Staunton.

The intersection of Greenville Avenue, Commerce Road, and Coalter Street near the Watering Can will be temporarily closed to traffic while crews work on the overhead power lines. The closure will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, beginning Wednesday and continuing through Friday (July 16-July 18). Dominion Energy has reserved Saturday as a possible completion day if work is delayed.

This closure will primarily impact drivers trying to access downtown or cross through the city using Greenville Avenue, Richmond Avenue, or Commerce Road. While the actual work zone is relatively small, the closure of this key intersection will require extensive detour routes throughout the city.

Residents can expect to see more than 100 detour signs posted around town, along with digital message boards providing advance warning of the closure. However, many drivers may encounter detour signage without actually reaching a closed road, depending on their destination and route.

Detours will largely utilize Statler Boulevard, Edgewood Road, Augusta Street, Middlebrook Avenue, and Hampton Street to get around the closed intersection. The city encourages residents to plan extra travel time and consider alternate routes during the construction period.
